Meet Ann Fleming, author of “When You Know What You Don't Want”

Tell us what your book, “When You Know What You Don’t Want” is about!

What did you love most about writing this book?

It reinforced in me, the power of choosing which thoughts I want to focus on, and I enjoyed coming up with rhymes that fit the narrative.

How did you start writing?

I was attempting to write my first novel and hit a speed bump, so I decided to step away for a bit. I started writing some poetry as a sort of therapeutic distraction, then, after an inspirational conversation with my son about a leaf, my first children's book "Bud" came to life. With my third book due out this fall, and a fourth in the editing process, it's safe to say that I have fallen in love with writing rhyming children's books. I know I'll eventually return to that first manuscript, but for now, it will have to wait because I'm enjoying myself too much.

Tell us a little bit about your self-publishing experience.

It's been a roller coaster ride of triumphs and failures, but with each step forward I see a bigger picture stating to take shape.

What was your biggest challenge in bringing the book to market and how did you solve it?

Without a doubt, my biggest challenge has been, and still is, marketing. As someone who never used social media prior to this, my discomfort shines through in every awkward post I make, but I keep going.

What's one piece of advice you have for other writers?

Focus on each small achievement as you go, and don't compare yourself to other more established authors.

Anything else you want folks to know?

Learning how to quiet my inner critic and cultivate a peaceful, kind mind helped me reclaim my power, and that's what I hope to share with young readers.
