Meet Lynn Busby, author of “The Scent of Water”

Tell us what your book, “The Scent of Water,” is about!

Sure! Here’s the summary:

The book's subtitle is "A compilation of moments with God." Thirty short chapters outline dreams and visions that had a dramatic effect on my inner world and the reframing of my world view coming out of childhood trauma.

What did you love most about writing this book?

I loved the sometimes excruciating work of attempting to put words to the mystical.

How did you start writing?

I started writing in Grade Two. I won a speech contest and discovered that stories can have an emotional effect on the audience. I wanted that for myself.

Tell us a little bit about your self-publishing experience.

I tried queries into traditional publishing methods. I did not get many responses, but those that did indicated that my book was too small and "niche." I looked into three local self-publishing firms. I attended an online webinar about self-publishing put on by a friend. In the end, I made a spontaneous decision and went with a small company from the US. I am in Canada and have since had second thoughts about this choice.

What was your biggest challenge in bringing the book to market, and how did you solve it?

The time and effort going back and forth with the publisher over edits.

What's one piece of advice you have for other writers?

Stick with it. Even though it has cost me a lot of money and effort, I have a visible end result, something that cannot be taken away. Only YOU know your story. You have a unique perspective, and even if there are not thousands of people that read it, some will. You can make a difference.

Anything else you want folks to know?

Writing is a creative process that not everyone can do. The pain and effort can be delicious.
